Taconic TRF-45 High Frequency Laminates

Introduction

Hello everyone! Welcome back to our channel. Today, we're diving into the exciting realm of high-frequency printed circuit boards (PCBs) and exploring a remarkable new generation of low-loss, thermally-stable options: Taconic TRF-45 laminate.

Taconic TRF-45 PCB materials mark an exciting advancement in the field of low-loss and thermally-stable high frequency materials, developed by Taconic Advanced Dielectric Division. With TRF-45, Taconic combines the benefits of woven-glass reinforcement for enhanced dimensional stability with their expertise in ceramic technology, resulting in a material that exhibits exceptional properties.

One of the key advantages of TRF-45 laminate is its low and consistent Z-axis expansion across a wide range of temperatures, including soldering conditions. This ensures reliable performance and stability even in demanding thermal environments.

Let's take a closer look at the properties offered by Taconic TRF-45 laminate.

Data sheet

The dielectric constant of TRF-45  laminate at 10 GHz, determined by the IPC-TM-650 2.5.5.6 test method, is 4.5. This value signifies its ability to store electrical energy in an electromagnetic field. Additionally, the dissipation factor at 10 GHz is 0.0035, indicating low energy loss during signal transmission.

Taconic TRF-45 high frequency material exhibits excellent resistance to moisture absorption, as demonstrated by its moisture absorption rate of ≤0.06%, tested according to IPC-TM-650 2.6.2.1. This characteristic ensures the material's stability and reliability in various environmental conditions.

The surface resistivity of TRF-45, measured using IPC-TM-650.2.5.17.1, is 3.0 x 10^7 Mohm, indicating its high electrical insulation properties. Furthermore, the volume resistivity, determined by IPC-TM-650 2.5.17.1, is 8.0 x 10^7 Mohm/cm, highlighting its effectiveness in preventing current leakage.

TRF-45  laminate exhibits exceptional flexural strength in both lengthwise and transverse directions. As per IPC-TM-650.2.4.4, the flexural strength in the lengthwise direction is 17000 lbs/in (177 N/mm^2), while in the transverse direction, it is 15000 lbs/in (103 N/mm^2). This property ensures the material's ability to withstand mechanical stress and maintain structural integrity.

The peel strength of TRF-45, determined by IPC-TM-650 2.4.8 (Thermal Stress), is >8 lbs/in (>1.4 N/mm). This high peel strength indicates its strong adhesion properties, making it suitable for applications where bonding is crucial.

TRF-45 exhibits a thermal conductivity of 0.43 W/m/K, as measured by ASTM F 433. This property enables efficient heat dissipation in applications that require thermal management.

The coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) values of TRF-45, determined by ASTM D 3386 (TMA), are 9 ppm/℃ in X and Y directions, and 40 ppm/℃ in Z direction. This exceptionally low CTE in the Z-axis direction minimizes the risk of delamination and ensures dimensional stability, making it well-suited for applications where reliability and structural integrity are paramount.
