Taconic TLY-3 Copper Clad Laminates Introduction Taconic TLY-3 is an avionics and aerospace grade laminate featuring very low dielectric constant (DK) base material, manufactured with ultra-lightweight woven fiberglass. Compared to chopped fiber reinforced PTFE composites, TLY-3 laminates offer significantly enhanced dimensional stability; its woven matrix structure delivers superior mechanical stability, making it well-suited for high-volume manufacturing processes. A key advantage of TLY-3 material lies in its low dissipation factor, which enables reliable deployment in 77 GHz automotive radar applications as well as various millimeter wave frequency antennas. Comparative OEM testing at 77 GHz between lightly reinforced TLY-3 and its closest chopped fiber reinforced competitor has demonstrated equivalent insertion losses and dielectric properties, supporting "drop-in" compatibility. The primary benefit of this compatibility is substantially higher manufacturing yields. Taconic TLY-3 high frequency laminate’s dielectric constant ranges from 2.17 to 2.40. For most thicknesses, the dielectric constant can be specified at any value within this range with a tight tolerance of +/- 0.02. In the low dielectric constant range, the dissipation factor is approximately 0.0009 at 10 GHz. Taconic TLY-3 RF PCB materials are widely used in a variety of high‑frequency and precision applications, including satellite communications, automotive radar systems, filters, couplers, avionics, and phased‑array antennas. Benefits Resists Warpage: The woven glass structure minimizes dimensional change for reliable high-volume assembly. Reduces Signal Loss: Ultra-low Df is critical for maintaining signal integrity at 77GHz and above (e.g., automotive radar). Improves Copper Adhesion: High peel strength enhances the mechanical bond and long-term reliability of circuits. Limits Moisture Ingress: Low absorption rate prevents performance drift in humid or harsh operating environments. Ensures Dk Uniformity: Consistent dielectric properties provide stable signal propagation for optimal circuit function. Facilitates Laser Processing: Taconic TLY-3 material is suitable for laser ablation, allowing for precise definition of fine features.
